USB Setup for Windows 7 for Omniflex products with USB ports

This article describes the once-off computer setup necessary to use Omniflex USB enabled devices. Follow the instructions listed here if you are a Microsoft Windows 7 user. These steps will set up your computer to use the USB port of Omniflex devices.

Preparation

To upgrade the firmware of an Omniflex device using USB the following is necessary:

  • A USB enabled Omniflex product.

  • The CD packaged with the product.

  • The USB cable packaged with the product.

With the USB disconnected, apply power to the Omniflex device. Insert the CD you received with your Omniflex product into the computer.

USB Setup

To setup USB on your computer, perform the following steps:

  1. Connect the USB cable to the Omniflex product and to your computer.

  2. In Windows 7 you will see a message above your system tray indicating that Windows is installing the device driver.

  3. Wait a few minutes for the device to install. Once Windows indicates the driver was successfully installed continue to the next section. (If Windows indicates there was problem, see the section below - Installing the Driver Manually.)

  4. Open the Device Manager:

    • Open the Start menu.

    • Right-click Computer and select Properties.

    • In the left-hand window pane, click Device Manager.

  5. In the Device Manager under "Ports (COM & LPT)", there will be a COM port called "STMicroelectronics Virtual COM Port". Make a note of the number of the COM port.

  6. If the virtual COM port number value is above 9 or the same as another COM port device, you will have to change the port number. If this is the case:

    • Double-click on the virtual COM port. This will open the properties window.

    • Go to the tab Port Settings.

    • Click Advanced.

    • In the Advanced settings window, there is a drop down box in the bottom left displaying the COM port number. Change this to a COM port number below 10.

  7. Make a note of the number of the virtual COM port. You will need to know this number when setting up Omniset to use the virtual COM port.

  8. Power down the unit.

You have successfully installed the USB driver. Reboot your computer to ensure the setting changes have taken effect.

Installing the Driver Manually

If you experienced trouble with step 3 in USB Setup:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable.

  2. Open Windows explorer and navigate to the CD drive. (If you do not have this CD, go to Downloading the Driver.)

  3. Open the USB driver directory.

  4. If you are using Windows 7 32-bit, run the file ending in Setup.exe.

  5. If you are using Windows 7 64-bit, run the file ending in Setup_x64.exe.

  6. If you are unsure which one you are using, click the start menu, right-click My Computer and select Properties. This window will show you what version your computer is running.

  7. Follow the installer instructions.

  8. Once the installation is complete, connect the USB cable to the Omniflex product and to your computer.

Continue with step 4 in USB Setup.

Downloading the Driver

If you do not have the CD that came with your Omniflex device, perform the following steps:

  1. Download the USB driver from here: STM Virtual COM port driver

  2. Open file location of the driver you have just downloaded.

  3. Extract the contents of the file you have just downloaded. The file will be called stsw-stm32102.zip.

  4. Continue from step 3 in Installing the Driver Manually.
