Optimised Wireless and Telemetry by Omniflex

Wireless telemetry over a long distance is now possible using Teleterm Radio RTUs because of their built-in radio and serial communications, PLC programmability and flexible I/O.

Wireless Telemetry in Plants is a necessity with the data acquisition requirement of modern monitoring and control for performance or compliance monitoring. In plant cabling, costs often push the economic viability of data acquisition system projects into the pending list of Plant Capex. The benefits of having the data is undeniable but too expensive to implement. Wireless communications provide a cost-effective solution and the technology is improving all the time.

The wireless spectrum is controlled, requiring a license to use a specified frequency and transmitter power. However License-free bands have been allocated worldwide to cater for the wireless equipment. These bands allow wireless equipment vendors to supply devices subject to rules on power and duty cycles ensuring the sharing of these bands by different equipment.

Wireless License free bands are extremely attractive for cable saving in the plant. Wi-Fi can be used for very short-range applications and is free to use in the 2.4GHz band most commonly. Where more range is required other license free bands like 868Mhz are employed for data transmission. These vary from country to country as legislated by governing bodies for the radio spectrum and are power restricted normally in the milliwatt range.  Distances of up to 20km are not uncommon with these low power transceivers. The Omniflex Teleterm range offers a range of compliant frequency band options to suit the world market.
